Neighbors built this garden 13 years ago at a site where centuries-old oak trees used to shade the meandering Chicago River. Since then it has provided a rich ecological education to hundreds of elementary school children at the Waters School, as well as memorable lessons in community for the dozens of volunteer gardeners who tend vegetable plots and native prairie plants and visitors who stop to enjoy the garden's natural beauty and wildlife. These are all excerpts from writings found in Waters School & Community Garden. The garden inspires people to leave anonymous musings, poetry, and sketches addressed to the place and those who take care of it, expressing gratefulness. These random love letters express this place best:
I am absolutely in love with this place.
It speaks to me in so many ways.
I came over here today hoping there would be people around working so that i could talk to someone about this place -
the history,
how the school and community collaborate,
how I can get involved...
But there was no one around,
so I sat down on one of the benches.
The place itself started speaking to me.
.. and I spoke back to it.
I wished it fertility and peace on this, the first day of Fall.
And I extend that wish to everyone who walks here
works here,
plays here,
rests here.
With love and appreciation from a thankful neighbor,
-E M
Sometimes I sit here and think
I think about life
I think about my family
And I think about people rich and poor
I think about nature and how sometimes
I wish we can be like the plants and the flowers
You can plant many flowers
and vegetables
and plants
all together
and they still grow.
Every plant is different yet they all use the
same soil to grow.
Why can't people be like that?
Why can't we just all come together
and learn to accept one another,
learn that no matter your color,
your appearance,
no matter how much money you have,
rich or poor
that if we just try to help one another,
send a smile,
or just say hello,
we can build a beautiful world.
just like this garden.
At the end of the day
We are all humans.
Just like at the end of the day
The plants and flowers share the same soil.
