The liver helps store and filter blood, secrete bile, and convert sugars into glycogen for storage. It also helps prepare nutrients for absorption in the body and detoxifies the body of harmful toxins that are ultimately eliminated in the urine.
Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) has been used for more than 2,000 years to ease liver ailments—and it's still widely used in Europe today. It grows wild up to 10 feet high and can be found all over the world. Except for the prickly parts, its leaves can be eaten and its seeds can be roasted and brewed.
Milk thistle contains a group of active compounds called silymarin, an antioxidant that destroys cell-damaging free radicals in the liver. Silymarin, as well as its most active compound silibinin, can counteract damage to the liver caused by viruses, alcohol, acetaminophen (Tylenol) and other medications, environmental and bacterial toxins, and poisonous mushrooms.
Since milk thistle is poorly absorbed, drinking it in a tea doesn't work very well. Look for concentrated formulas extracted from the seeds of the plant. These standardized capsules contain 70-80% silymarin or silibinin which is quickly absorbed into the blood where it goes to work.
Jigsaw Health Liver Support comes in standardized capsules that contain 80% silymarin. This fast-absorbing formula goes right to the blood to help protect and detoxify the liver.

Alpha lipoic acid is also a chelator, so I wouldn't take it if you currently have any mercury amalgam fillings. Or you run the risk of overloading your liver.
