The thing with socialism is that it gives WAY too much power to the government. All of the socialists on here that think a socialist government would treat protesters better than a conservative government have obviously never read a book.

The Harper government is hardly pro-military to a fascist/socialist level. Google red square military parade or north korea military parade. THAT's pro military.

@EruditeCanadian What you are describing is fascism and not socialism. There have been some fascist socialist governments but there also has been fascist right wing dictators. Socialism can work perfectly fine within a democracy but fascism cannot. Harper government is very nationalistic and pro military which are shared traits with fascist regime. In the US the military can arrest citizens w/o trial and wiretap w/o warrant, effectively stripping peoples rights, freedoms and individuality.

The funny thing is, Fascist and Socialism are basically the same thing in practice. Both you have one guy, or group controlling the entire government. Both ruthlessly suppress any opposition. Both control their economies. Both are very militaristic. Both are nationalistic, ie The German Fatherland, or Mother Russia. Both attain power by claiming to be "for the people", but afterwards strip everyone of their rights, freedoms and individuality.

@EruditeCanadian The Nazi party started as simply socialist but ended up being a fascist government. Fascism is opposed to conservatism, liberalism, and two major forms of socialism: communism and social democracy. It rejects egalitarianism, materialism, and rationalism in favour of action, discipline, hierarchy, spirit and will. You can be a fascist or have fascist principals without being left wing. People are comparing them to fascists and not socialists. I don't want to pay for wars.
