@doud0un3 I play in the OVA and have never once seen a card been given by a ref, and there's been lots of swearing.

In NFHS, that is considered bad sportsmanship and should have been a red card. A red card is side out and point to the other team. The player is lucky to have received a yellow card, which is just a warning. A red + yellow card would have removed him from the match. Any profanity in NFS is a red card.

@amicitiavera same in canada

I have actually done the same, except I hit the ref in the head!! Luckily he's a long time friend, I was embarassed & exclamed how sorry I was for losing control. He said nothing except give me a yellow card, which in USAV is Penalty of a point/sideout. This is not H.S.Girls match nor NCAA. Notice there's no line judges, but there's coaches, it most likely is Jr. Olympic USAV, especially since the team captain approaches the referee. Bottom line...don't ever get so mad you kick the ball!!

The International rules of Volleyball say under Art. 21.6 that a yellow card a penalty is. And 21.3.1 say:
21.3.1 Penalty
The first rude conduct in the match by any team member is penalized with a point and service to the opponent.
But by Beachsoccer ist a yellow card a caution for the team.

Also the yellow card is an individual penalty, however the team suffers due to the loss of a rally. Every player and staff member of a team can get a separate yellow card. About the red and yellow/red cards you're absolutely correct.

I'm afraid your opinion is based on the rules which aren't valid anymore since the late nineties. At present, the yellow card results in a loss of a rally.
-
Incorrect decision then.

This is wrong.
A yellow card is a penalty for the team. She lost the service. The red card ist a expulsion for the player, he must going to the "Penalty Area" for the rest of the Set. The 3rd action ist Yellow/Red. The yellow/red card is a disqualification for the player. He is sent of for the rest of the game.
my team mate got a red card for yelling "fuck" out loud

Well, in Europe, according to FIVB Volleyball Official Rules, yellow card is penalty and mean lossing a serve, and point to opponent team.
The red card means expelling the team's player(s) for a set and also mean serve and point for opponent team. The both cards (yellow and red, together) mean disqualification of player for that game and the player must leave the game area.
