Wide angle lenses are just a mathematical calculation away from a straight lens. Thats why the 4 points are on the outmost corners, where the angles are the widest. One simple (complex actually) calculation and you can identify the cameras viewing angle and box

Hmm that's interesting. I'm still not sure how it would work with wider lenses (I'm talking 80-110 degree lenses) since I don't see how only 4 points can account for lens distortion.

Will this calibration work with cameras with a wide angle lens though? I would assume this will only work for camera that use lenses with no distortion.

Hi cerupcat,
I'm using a Microsoft LifeCam VX-6000, which has a 71-degree wide angle lens. That's the camera used in this video and it works great!
