    Damned, you observe well, now that you are asking this question, and even there might be some truth with it, since the Golf engine was the first VW engine after the beatle boxer engine, but BEFORE it was VW that overtook NSU. Since the NSU engine was a very prooven and good engine they might have had "a closer glance" to it.(Even VW had a model (K70) that had the original NSU engine inside). Both are 4 cyl. inline engines that should have the same firing order.

    What I know for sure is that the Y-exhaust pipes were very similar with the race versions on both of the cars. As you know, it is these Y-pipes thogether with the firing order that are responsible to a good amount of the sound.

    - Interesting question what you were raising, I will try to follow it up.
