In the early morning hours of Saturday 16 February 2008, Ben and Cherri drove their daughter Jordan to Perry Meridian High School in Indianapolis to participate in the Indiana State School Music Association Solo Ensemble Contest.

This is an annual music event, which for 2008, brought together 1428 soloists to perform the songs they sang in district competitions for adjudicators comprised of of vocal coaches from colleges, universities, high schools and private vocal studios.

What made this unusual for Jordan and her family was that she was the only elementary student from the entire state to win a gold medal at district contests in the highest division possible back in January.

The first division categories require a student to perform an advanced level musical selection and most entrants at this level of performance are in high school.

Jordan was the only elementary student to participate in the state competitions on the 16th, where she won a gold medal for her performance of Glady's Rich's composition American Lullaby.

Frankfort, Indiana has produced several young students in the past who participated in state solo ensemble contest, including Christopher Peterson who was a 6th grader at the time back in the early 1990's, and Steve Hansen who was in 7th grade in the mid 1990's, both from Frankfort Middle School.

In the year that Christopher Peterson won a gold medal as a 6th grade boy soprano at state contest, there were only about 8 other students from the entire state from elementary schools around the state.

Jordan's win on Saturday was all the more unusual, considering that she is likely the youngest, at the age of ten, to participate and win a gold medal at this level of competition.................in the history of Indiana State School Music Association sponsored state level competition.
