Hi again!
This is a small sculpted detail of a church. It was shot in difficult low light conditions using a regular camera.

I took 2 photos in sequence, one on the left and one a few meters away on the right.
Then I reconstructed the 3d model with my program PhotoSculpt (it took a minute, it's all automatic)
I thought it was interresting to see how sculpted details can be easily created and added to your 3D creation, be it for architecture, film making, games, visuals.

  • Thanks, yes I agree with you normal maps generated with Photosculpt are awsome.

    If you liked them then you should maybe check-out displacements maps too. They are really good too. (Use this in combination with either subdivision, tesselation or parallax maping)

    Just a side comment, do you know of any programs that are currently using parallax mapping? I have seen one example in a game engine, however, this could easily apply to high end 3d applications in place of normal, bump, and displacement maps. I haven't read up on it much, but what type of maps do you use for parallax mapping? And is this something that vray, or other renderers are able to take advantage of?

  • @goomee3d I've played with Amnesia Dark Descent witch uses parallax maping. It's soog good that I thought it was displacement maping. (see my blog)

    I believe only game engines uses that, no 3D package I know of but I don't know them all.

    BTW Unity has parallax maping in their feature list. Give it a try? (it's free)

    Educated guess: I suppose it's using regular displacement map to work as the Microsoft DirectX SDK parallax demo uses one. But I never used this.

  • Hi, I see you know zbrush and mudbox.

    This is NOT SCULPTED AT ALL.

    This is was "shot in 3D", using a regular camera and 2 pictures in sequence.

    3D model is automatically computed from the 2 jpg images. I'm using a special program that I developped for this. It's very simple (one click) and fast too.

    But what would you use as a map for the parallax method? Normal maps, Height maps? Or does it use it's own specific type of map. I know with displacement mapping methods, you can use height maps, or normal maps.

    That is all of what I have gathered, and I am already using Unity, I was not sure if this was in the free version feature list. I haven't really done much with it, since I am focused on modeling and selling at this time, and working full time.
