I bought a new MBP and one of the things that sold me on it was the 8-9 hour battery life Apple was boasting about.
After using my computer a few weeks I was hard pressed to squeeze 5 hours out of this thing and before I started calling Apple liars, I wanted to see if 8-9 hours was within reach.
My test doesn't reflect normal usage, which begs the question: why bother? Regardless, this test will give you an idea of where Apple may have come up with their hyperbolic claims (read: don't use the computer and it could possibly last 8-9 hours).

Inverting the screen colours will actually diminish battery life - An LCD screen's backlight is fixed on during normal use, and LCD screens work by filtering that backlight. Less energy is used just to let the backlight shine through, producing a white colour, rather than filtering it, to produce black.

Actually, the time is based on the computer just on the desktop page. Because if it uses a little bit of CPU the computer will need to run better making it have less battery.
