@zzerDrezz 1st: Russia is not behaving very sensibly in general, so it doesn't really matter if attacking Finland makes no sense. They might do it anyway.
2nd: There are other reasons for maintaining a credible defense capability, among them de facto indipendence. We don't want Russian intervention just because we have different laws regarding child custodianship or some other issue. Russia has a propensity to exert its influence where it can. We want to be friends, but standing on our own feet.

A friend of mine, who served as a U.N. peacekeeper in the Balkans in the mid-1990s told me that, at one occasion, his company consisting of Finnish soldiers, tested their skills on the rifle-range against U.S. marines firing the M-16. The Finns, using the RK-95, won by a landslide. The marines were furious.
