Johnson should have proclaimed that all enforcement of property rights by the US government was forfeited by the act of secession. The US government then conquered the land in war, owned the land, and could distribute it as it saw fit, including to those who had actually worked the land before the war.

Those white planters should have been placed in shackles and convicted with 25 years hard labor, for the theft of land, theft of labor, owed wages, crimes of violence, and crimes so unspeakable, over several generations.
These betrayals and backstabbing toward Blacks was possible because in the main, Blacks were unarmed. There is the lesson.

This is the kind of sh-t that blows me away and this show is morbidly justifying it. It is exactly the same thing as if there was a war today and an invading army burned your house down and ran you and your family off your property and after the war you went back and some guy tried to take it. The Yankee generals had no authority to take people's land away.
