One of the most delightful occurances of 1998 was the spectacular vault of Anna Rechnio from 19th at the Olympics, to SECOND place at Worlds after the short program. A fast, dynamic skater who just exuded excitement! Although I thought her long program was adequate to claim a step on the podium, the judges somewhat controversialy dropped her to 4th. Shame, because it would have been Poland's first ladies medal.

One of the few who can skate well to the music of "Gone with the Wind", which naturally appealled to my Atlanta roots. Excellent choreography.

  • One of the few times the Judges got this right. Really Deserved 2nd Place here.

We rarely see such a power skater like Rechino anymore who had such incredible speed and edging. It's a small detail but amazing She has the speed of Kostner but the Edging and Line works of the likes Arakawa/Sato.

Now if only Malinina had been ranked 3rd or 4th in the SP, now the would have been fairly judged!

  • @pooguy77 Yes, i think they missed a great opportunity to promote skating in Poland, and other small countries. So important for people to at least think miracles are possible....best wishes

  • She was absolutely robbed in the short program. As much as I like Michelle's Rachmaninoff, Rechnio was the true winner of the short program. Anna had so much better athleticism than Kwan here and had very good artistry too here.

  • @allenglandlawns It was a BIG disappointment to me that she did not even medal. They miss so many opportunities to advance and promote skating around the world. Think what an impact a medal for Poland would have had.......oh well. The performance is still here, and we can all judge for ourselves. best wishes

  • I agree...bronze should have been hers.

  • Nice program, lots of speed! Would like to have seen the scores. Should have been in the 5.6-5.7 area I would think.

  • She finished 5th overall, not 4th as is stated in the video description. Laetitia Hubert (who placed 3rd after SP) finished 4th overall. I loved these Worlds. I was so pulling for Rechnio and Hubert to medal at this event!

  • wow nice big jumps!

  • @allenglandlawns Sorry, Kwan all the way.

  • She's so fast! And powerfull! And has nice legs.. not sticks :D

    Yay for Poland!

  • Rechnio pamiętam jak przez mgłę...ten sukces pamietam...miała niesamowitą szybkość jazdy; niestety nie pamiętam dlaczego zrezygnowała ze sportu; no i szkoda że tak mało sukcesów:)

  • For all of us who sometimes bitch about Dick Button complaining about non-US skaters, take a listen here!!! He knows his stuff :)
