@neilb229 -- Well, for one thing, they may have kept the advertising breaks in an attempt to remind people that this was not actually happening (some Americans in 1938 thought the radio broadcast of "War Of The Worlds" was reporting a real-life event). Secondly, the program depicted a fictional event which wasn't really taking place -- which means that the usual programming guidelines wouldn't be preempted for an emergency. In a true emergency, news programs wouldn't break for ads.

there's a point in being more than slightly alarmed when a message is sent in the shape of 3 huge mile-long rocks / after all, the pioneer message to other planets was harmless in comparison. the response to it was highly unethical.

They launched two kinetic kill missiles at the planet so far, with more possibly to come. They do not come in peace. As for that most violent planet in the galaxy claim, I call moosefeathers.
