[Please read] Live! From the Garden of Rad: it's She-Who-Must-Be-Cute!

Child actress (alumna of Hal Roach's Our Gang) Mary Kornman grew up to be an attractive young woman. She continued to act in films throughout the 1930s. One of her least distinguished and most peculiar appearances was in the 12-chapter serial QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE, released in 1935. In it, she played two roles—the Queen of the Jungle (nee Joan Lawrence) and also Mary Lawrence, Joan's ill-fated mother. As an African jungle queen, Mary is certainly cute, but—a far cry from, say, H. Rider Haggard's "Ayesha" in SHE—also surprisingly helpless. She inspires neither great respect nor fear in the natives belonging to her Rad domain. (Can't place Rad in Africa? It is located near the Temple of Mu. Now you know!) Once she learns to how to speak her hero's name, "David," she repeats it constantly—and at no time more pathetically or pleadingly than when she's imperiled (which is too often). It is actor Reed Howes who plays "David Worth"—handsome, agreeable, persevering, but rather unremarkable just the same. Film producer Herman A. Wohl added more weight and less meaning to an already ponderous, silly, and diffuse adventure story by incorporating bizarre (especially when it is speeded up) stock footage of animals, etc., from "The Jungle Goddess," a 1922 silent-era movie.

Why upload to YouTube a video re: QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE? Because Mary's so doggone cute! (Can there possibly be a better reason?)

  • Bad Monkey NO!! We do NOT weild knives and kill the jungle queen, NO

    Bad Monkey!!

    BAD BAD MONKEY!!

  • You are on the right track, but I disagree a bit. When she was years old she looked like an eight year old. Fine. When she was fourteen she looked fourteen. When she was in her twenties she looked...well...fourteen. Do you agree?

  • Thank you for posting it up

  • Poor Mary! She was probably the best of the Our Gang "leading ladies", but she was stuck in this when she grew up. Trouble was, she looked 8 years old when she was 8 years old & still looked like she was 8 when she was in her 20's. Reed Howes was a famous Arrow Collar model & had some name in silent pictures. Check out "The Lost City", also an Africa based serial w. an Our connection. Claudia Dell, who played Spanky's mother, is the beautiful leading lady in that.

  • ahhhh...the art of the tease....so forgotten
