Up for auction is a Singer 403a sewing machine. That has been thoroughly cleaned, lubricated, timings checked/reset, gears inspected, and repainted where needed. I won't make any false claims about the machine. Like saying it is an industrial machine, or do crazy demos like sewing ¼" thick leather. What I have done is set up a demo of the machine on YouTube (keyword Russ48236) for you. This way you can see what you're buying. There are additional high quality photos on Flickr.com for your inspection. http://www.flickr.com/photos/singer403a/
This Singer 403a features include a direct drive motor, all metal gears, (no rubber belts), drop-in bobbin, full rotary hook, and a metal exterior casing. The Slant Needle design allows for better viewing area while sewing. Other features of this machine are: Twin Needle stitching is accomplished by inserting two needles into the needle clamp at the same time, glass optics that focus the light on your sewing, and an Elevator throat plate lever (simplifies darning).
Included are 16 Decorative Discs, Ruffler, Straight Stitch plate, Seam guide, 15/16 Binder foot, Straight Stitch foot, Special purpose foot, Button sew-on foot, Adjustable Zipper foot, 3/16 hemmer foot, Cording foot, Snap-on shank, Satin stitch snap-on foot (clear), Overedge snap-on foot, Straight stitch snap-on foot, Mechanical Even feed foot, Original attachment box, and the original Slant-O-Matic owners Manual

@rosavaal Singer's last all metal machine {both inside & out} was there very first Touch & Sew from 1963. Another great model to buy if you can find one in really good condition. All models from 620 up have some form of nylon part. Why, would they do that is beyond me. In the long run they ended up ruining there good reputation. Now today Singers are Walmart junk to be avoided like the plague! Better to go on E-bay or Craigslist and find a good used model.

@rosavaal The Singer Futura 900 {Singer's last flatbed model} and the 920 {free-arm} both from 1973-74. Both models are good machines because they include 4 important stretch stitches that you need when sewing or mending modern man-made fabrics. But both are full of nylon parts. There still good machines to buy if you can find one in good condition. But there not going to last like Singer's 400 series. The 400's were Singers best made model's.

*Sigh* yes I still have my brothers. I got a new 401a though. It runs beautifully, and I managed to get it at a reasonable price.

@InweTaralom Do you still have the brother?

I had one of those until we moved to our new apartment. Instead of detaching the machine from the desk, my brothers threw the whole thing out! I still have the cams and manual though.

I Highly recomend the Singer Futura 920 known as "The last great singer sewing machine" from 1973, subsequent models like the 1979 creative touch were made with plastic parts prone to break

well how much are you selling this for ,

They handle fabric thickness the same. Neither is more "heavy duty" than the other. The difference between them is that the 403 requires "cams," special discs, to make it zigzag and perform other stitch patterns. The 401 uses cams optionally. It can zigzag, etc, without them.

Is the 401A and 403A are 2 different machine? Which one better for sewing thick fabric? Thanks.
