Great replies B. BBC probably did control content to a large degree, but had Huw really disliked the boys I think that it would show conclusively. I believe that what we're seeing is an example of "the English way" as P. Floyd called it, and as you noted, a product of Victorian mores. It could've been a lot nastier and still passed BBC muster if Wheldon truly felt contempt for these young men. I still am of the opinion that you are over-interpreting the mans manner.

If Wheldon DID indeed choose to feature them, that would speak volumes about his intention. If that is the case, his manner could be interpreted as an inside joke, railing against the very things that are the foundation of his Victorian principles. But I don't think that's the case...

You make an interesting point. First, that Huw had control over what guests and content were being shown on his program. To that point, I cannot speak with any authority. I do know that the content of radio at that point in England was being highly regulated by the government. Was the BBC the same? My feeling, from observing this, is that Huw did not have creative control and did not choose to feature them. The feeling of disdain and contempt emanating off of him is almost palpable.

You and jf99 are both mistaken about Huw's attitude towards these boys. For the time (barely 13 years past the end of WWII) and being an older English fellow, he's positively glowing at these kids. They weren't famous, it wasn't a "ratings coup" to have them on. They were on because he liked what they were doing and chose to feature them. They're only nervous because they're on LIVE TV. You're like what, 20? Wtf do you know about manners from more than half a century ago? Sheeesh!
