We have to see this static electricity discharge almost everyday during monsoon.
This clip taken over the Bay of Bengal at FL320.

  • I don't think I would call that St. Elmo's fire as S.E. Fire is more of a plamsa. Your video looks more like common static electric arcs across a windshield. I saw them on my C182 once on a very dry night.

  • @Msagro5 You're probably right. Thanks, corrected title.

Anyway, whenever we see the zapping on the windshield, if we dimmed off all cockpit lights, lean forward and look through the windshield there will be St. Elmo's fire radiates from the nose radome which is kind of glowing plasma.... but that one is far beyond my camcorder capture capability!

  • Can this cause any mishap in the aircraft's systems?

  • @immortalisblog No problem at all. This is quite normal indeed.

  • wow, did you guy's turn to avois this or was it a scheduled turn?

  • @ImpulsivePlay3r That was actually the turning back on track. At the start of the clip we're about 20nm right of airway.
