this is real interesting!
-
Andersonville was a very notorious prison camp in Georgia. Lotta US soldiers died there.
-
What happened at Andersonville?
-
As I listened to the letter, I became engrossed in what he was saying, and forgot that I already knew his fate. When the picture of Andersonville appeared, I remembered and my heart sank.

fascinating glimpse into a personal view during the Civil War. It truly "came alive". Thank you for sharing this remarkable piece of history

see the sun 8 or 9 hours a day??
Where the hell was this war in the north pole?

@blackyukon2001 I wondered about that too. I retraced his route, and in West Va. there are a lot of places they travelled and stayed surrounded by high cliffs, so although it might not be "dark", you can't see the sun. It might have seemed strange especially for a farm boy from flat Ohio.

What a fantastic historical record you have and have made. You have brought to life a dead voice from another era. You have preserved a moment in history which so easily could have been lost for all time.

Hey thanks Kester! I hope you are having a great holiday. I also traced his footsteps in West Virginia 2 summers ago according to diary entries....it was neat to "time travel"

You must keep that as a tradition in your family. Have you thought about finding documents and photographs of those places during the 1860's?

The photos of Andersonville are facinating. They were taken during that horrible summer (when he was there). I stare and stare at those shots, wondering if he is one of those gaunt faces. I have never found photos of the West Virginia campaign. The diary I found was amazing. It mentions his name on the day of capture. I went to that very spot.
