Here's a quick How-To on automatically syncing external audio in Apple's new Final Cut Pro X. I filmed using a Canon 60D DSLR and used a Zoom H1 Handy Recorder for external audio recording.

Then break apart clip items, drop the internal mic's volume to -96db (all the way down) and make that a compound clip.

I should have looked further down the threads: Sam Cel Roman nails it.

I did this, but when I dragged it onto the timeline and played the clip it was obvious I was hearing both channels, the embedded and the synched audio. I couldn't find a way to separate the two (only a single waveform showed). So instead of dragging the clip I clicked the drop down command "open in timeline". It seemed to open up in a separate stretch of timeline with both audio clips separate and visible, allowing me to mute the on-camera one. Not sure why I have to got through this extra loop!

Curious as to what kind of message you get if you click on the wrong video clip? Also wondering how it works if you started your audio recording say, a minute, before you hit record on the camera?

Geez, LOUISE, you got right to it. I was home doing a test to simply know how. Now, I KNOW HOW. Thank you very much. Can you tell me how many source fils you can synch the audio to? I mean if you have 10 cameras that made at least traceable sound will it handle it no prob? Thanks.
