Spike Hughes is not well remembered today. He did play a small, but valuable contribution in getting hot music with original arrangements onto disc, via being musical director for the fledgling Decca record label. He was a restless person who never seemed to stay long anywhere. An Irishman, who started recording in England in 1929, and finished in 1933.He then sailed off to the USA and recorded with some of the top US musicians of the day.By end of 1934 he gave up dance music and concentrated on Classical, before eventually getting a career outside of music altogether. Most of his records are wonderful, highly individual interpretations of dance band music. His biggest influences where the trendy "white" bands from NY,namely Trumbauer and Bix,Red and Miff etc. Here the trumpet is Bix soundalike Norman Payne
