I Pledge Allegiance was on display at the West Michigan Healing Field. This was a 9/11 memorial celebration that was visited by thousands of people. We want to thank all of the organizers and volunteers who helped make the event a success!

"I Pledge Allegiance" was conceived as a way to honor important heroes, memories and events in our nation's history. The patriotic nature of the theme resonates with relevance as our country recently marked the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attack which occur in the weeks preceding ArtPrize 2011. This mixed media design was created to resemble the United States flag. Assembled from 312 separate 4 inch tiles, it consists of photographs, hand-painted and mirrored images covered by an epoxy resin to create a colorful red, white and blue mosaic. The individual tiles are surrounded by a blue frame with white lettering representing the words to the Pledge of Allegiance. The tiles run the gamut from Betsy Ross to shots from the Hubble spacecraft; from President Obama to George Washington; from Iwo Jima to 9/11 "Ground Zero"; from Captain America to saluting soldiers. This work contains images that should appeal to all patriots, regardless of age, background or political persuasion.

Rip Maclay is the managing partner of an investment firm he founded, Cedarwinds Investment Management. His photography work has been featured in news publications and recognized in photo contests. Maclay feels a strong connection between the worlds of art and business. "Like never before, we need to tell a relevant story. We are at a critical intersection where powerful ideas and innovative technologies are creating exciting new ways to use our imaginations, to stretch the creative process, to integrate ideas and to discover new relationships. The discipline needed to work in a constantly changing environment, while incredibly challenging, can be extremely rewarding. In the end, the measure of our success is in how effectively we communicate our story."
