NS Port Road Branch (Tribute)

NS Port Road Branch extends from Perryville, Maryland to Enola, Pennsylvania. Despite the "branch" title, this line is Norfolk Southern's main line for traffic headed to Baltimore, MD and Delaware. The reason for the nocturnal nature of the line is very apparent when you see the southern end of the line, at Perryville, MD. Here the branch connects with the busy Amtrak Northeast Corridor. Obviously the Amtrak dispatchers favor the quick passenger trains, and only run the freights when the action dies down (which pretty much only happens at night). Also, there is a daytime speed restriction for freights on the NEC, which is lifted after 10pm. The best way to railfan this line is to stay up all night! The first eastbound leaves Enola around 7pm and the last westbound leaves Perryville around 5 or 6 am.

Add: Also, NS trains keeps heads travel to East and North so they using on Amtrak NEC during in early morning or mid morning; and which they would will come to enter to Davis in Newark take to enter into NS Delmarva Secondary Branch and, take more keep heads to north to Downtown Wilmington in Delaware.

Thanks to Richie (CSXRP) for heads up and quick info me about I forget add one about that, lol!

  • isnt this whooole line nocturnel??

  • What you mean????

  • Like ONLY at night?

  • Oh okay I understand what you mean..so there most runs on night. Between 10:00pm to 10:00am or 11:00am because of Amtrak Restricts around in morning to night that's why they runs on night to morning that's it...if you want know about those schedules so I will give you the link if you interests...

  • but doesnt NS own the line? I think its stupid that amtrak controls it, they should run trains out of enola and have them wait for entrance onto the NEC

  • NS Port Road Branch? Yeah that NS own the line does that...Yeah that right that where they trains out from Enola to Perryville. Yeah that right they should wait for plan to entrance onto the NEC as which if NS train allows to another NS train pass them from Baltimore or Delaware if clear then they plan onto the NEC head to Baltimore or Delaware
