I know it's been a while since you asked, but he is now captain and is going to be mayor in the Colombian Army. He was kidnapped with 6 soldiers under his command while in combat against FARC They were ordered to retreat (out of ammo) but he decided to stay and fight, doing this they gave the time to the rest of their platoon to follow the order to retreat.

But like you said, at least he is free now, and the guy at the end of the video wiht Betancourt, was saying the same thing; 10 years waiting for his rescue... waiting for the army to rescue them. Since most of them wee Colombian army soldiers, taken hostage while fighting farc.

Esto aquí en Colombia desató una gran polémica si se le debía o no pagar la recompenza ya que nadie esperaba que un guerrillero hiciera una cosa de esas por plata. Finalmente, si bien se decidió pagarle la recompensa a alias Rojas el se encuentra detenido respondiendo por sus crímenes.

Creo que la parte de alias Rojas me quedó redactada de tal forma que puede dar una idea equivocada del asunto así que a continuación escribo que fue lo que pasó para evitar confusiones.
