Externally, the man we see eats ravenously. Internally, however, we begin to see he is reaching for self-actualization that seems out of his grasp. His gluttony reflects our society's obsession with food as a means of fulfillment, which is never really satisfying.
The woman practicing Tai Chi appears to be meditative. But through flashback scenes we see her inner struggle with a violent memory/fantasy that explores the actual, martial quality of the Tai Chi exercise she is performing along with her own internal fears.
