I was into tall ships, windjammers when in my teens. Everything from Baltic four-masted schooner to the proud Hamburg based Laeiz "Flying P-liners" Passat, Pamir, Preussen, Pommern, Potosi et al.
All Cape Horn certified magnificient ship.
Some remain like Pommern a museum ship in Mariehamn and Passat in Lubeck.

Maybe just set some low fore-and-aft sail and let the engine tick over. Alternatively, if time is not important, how about heaving-to and waiting for the gale to abate.

Probaply from the Canaries back to Holland.
