a defeat of Prop 8 is also a step to recognition of a number of Federal rights (eventually) as a result of marriage which includes immigration rights among others.

What prop 8 supporters won't tell you is that prop 8 does in fact take away rights. Marriage and domestic partnerships are not equal. Rights taken away include pension plan survivor benefits, long-term care insurance for public employees, tax exemption of inheritance, exemption from testifying against your spouse and marriage.
