Documentary: The Siege of Cluan Place **Amateur Footage**

This amateur footage was filmed by protestant residents of Cluan Place during a prolonged attempt at ethnic cleansing by the IRA in the Short Strand area of Belfast.

Cluan Place is a tiny, isolated cul-de-sac surrounded on three sides by streets inhabited by sectarian IRA members and their supporters. For months the pensioners and young families of Cluan Place came under attack from blast bombs, petrol bombs, bricks, bottles, bags of urine and even gunfire as the IRA attempted to drive these people from their homes.

There is a housing shortage in the Short Strand area and Sinn Fein orchestrated this plan so catholics could move into the homes once the protestants were forced out.

Fortunately, the resilience and determination of the innocent protestants to remain in their homes meant this ethnic cleansing plan was never fulfilled. The brave residents of Cluan Place deserve the utmost respect for refusing to leave their homes - despite the fact dozens of them were hospitalised with serious injuries.
