It wasn't a song he really practiced for, it was just fun for him. I doubt he was even trying very much, he was really there to just be with his hometown crowd and have fun. So even if it was off pitch (which I don't really think it was)...so what? He was just having fun.

Because there were a bunch of kids who were already scheduled to sing the national anthem... and when David Cook was obviously going to be in the top 3, they were going to bump the kids (which was heartbreaking for them) and David Cook said "No effing way. Give them the anthem. I'll sing Take Me Out to the Ballgame or something."
David Cook is a hell of a nice guy.
