はじめまして、アメリカ津軽三味線奏者マイク・ペニーです。もしよかったら、私の他のビデオもぜひご覧になってください!

Mike Penny plays a traditional piece of the Tsugaru shamisen repertoire called San-sagari, named for the particular tuning that the piece is played in. "San-sagari" means to lower the third string a whole step, thus changing the original tuning, (called "hon-choushi") from fourth-fifth (in C: C-F-C) to a tuning of stacked fourths (C-F-Bb). I learned this arrangement from my sensei Fukushi Toyoaki last winter in Tokyo. Hope you like it! Please check out my other videos of jazz, baroque, Balkan gypsy, etc. being played on shamisen.

  • Oh! Fantastic! I was born and raised in Tsugaru. I am happy to listen to this perfomed by a foreign musician.

  • OK... I now OFFICIALLY love san-sagari tuning! ^_^ I've studied Japanese music in general for years, and I have been looking for a style that features the C - D - F - G - Bb - C scale (suspended pentatonic). There are some ornamental notes (to our Western ears) in this song, but I also heard the little girl singing the vocal melody in a different video.

It was the suspended pentatonic! ^_^ Eureka! Such gorgeous music. Thank you!

  • nice nice

  • i could listen to this all day...

  • this is great!

  • すごい!

  • 音が丁寧で、すごく聞きやすい。日本人でも覚えにくいこの訳の分からない曲をよくも弾きこなすものだと感心します。

  • san sagari rhymes with T T B BRAHHHHHHHH!! ROCK! No, just kidding! It's good man, it's good! Fukushi sensei would be stowkie! Does the Duck have anything? I mean today (Monday)? Shit!... Are U serious??? woa.

  • Wow!!

  • Very cool Mike. It's refreshing to hear a piece with 三下がり tuning. I've personally only got a single, small, redition of 'sakura' down with that tuning. It's fun though. A bit more relaxed sound, very tranquil.
