It's more like that because I sped up the demo. In normal play it's a lot slower, but still quite anti-climactic.

Yeah, if you upgrade your Emergency Defenses all the way the colony will usually survive. However, that's only on the larger planets like volcanic/ice/terran, I'm not sure if the asteroids can survive even with full pop upgrades too.
