it is supposed to be a terrible noise, it is Muse, not some 60's band.

I also listened to the original version, and it has a sort of impatience in it. You just want it to be faster. I think Muse noticed this and played it their way.

I do think the Shadows are brilliant for composing this song.

Don't forget, The Shadows version was originally recorded in 1960!!! The version used to introduce the Edgar Wallace TV shows, was an orchestral version with a  slow almost dreamy sound.
