Here is a short clip taken while we were working a 2400ton freight train from Kimberley to De Aar. Unfortunately this was to be the last and final working for both this class 15CA no 2828 and the 2nd loco class 25NC 3481. On arrival into De Aar both fires were dropped and both locos were sent forward to the railway museum near Cape Town where they were simply left to rot. 2828 was finally rescued by a privat buyer in about 2007 and has since been plinthed but the once famous 3481 was cut up about 2007 also. So much for a museum!!

  • you firing, wow. was it tough work for you.

  • Working as a fireman was real hard work but it was a job that I was very proud of. One certainly became very fit and tough. When the train arrived at its destination you knew you were the one who kept the loco going. If you had a regular locomotive like I always did then you took great pride in keeping that locomotive looking great. Working hours were whatever they could get out of you. Once I worked 67 hours in one shift.

  • that fireman is really battling up the line with the shovel

  • To tell you the truth that was a realy enjoyable trip and the engine as usual steamed like a dream as always. That fireman is me on my last hand fired locomotive on the Kimberley to De Aar line. It was a magical but very sad day of work as we knew it was the end for steam in Kimberley.

  • 15CA No 2828 can be seen on You Tube , search for 'Gospel Express Robertson' The loco will be refurbished, not to working condition, in due course.

  • Great video and now part of steam history.

Your job as fireman must have been very tough, but with its rewards of keeping the wheels turning and arriving on time.

  • People like me dream about having a job like this. Big locomotives at speed, and you had a first hand account... The only angle I see them from, is the ground.

I am glad you post these videos, I have probably seen most of them. =)

I was six when this video was taken...

  • What a great video, I'm a U.S. railroader, wish I could've been there! Love those 4-8-4's, but I'd have to be about 20 years younger to deal with that machine! Thanks!

  • well, i have no idea how guys can do that kind of work. but i guess it takes alot of adrenilen to keep going strong
