The Japanese town of Rikuzentakata was once a prosperous fishing village with a strong whaling heritage. Today, Rikuzentakata stands as a haunted, obliterated place - torn apart by the 2011 Tsunami.

Rikuzentakata was once a vibrant fishing port, a place of people, temples and traditional houses and was listed as one of Japan's most scenic places. Today, Rikuzentakata is a hellish place choked with dirt and debris, empty except for the swarm of bulldozers gnawing at its remains. It's almost certain that many of the one thousand still missing will never be found. "It was a quake like I'd never experienced before" says fisherman Yoshiharu Yoshida. As Japan grapples with its biggest disaster since the Second World War, many are struggling to rebuild their lives and find jobs in what has become the most expensive natural calamity in world history. "There are people who lost houses and lost relatives. I lost relatives as well. If we keep crying and don't do anything nothing will change. Step by step we should go forward".

  • That boy's house was saved 'cause he used many balloons. He had help from an old koot. The movie Up was based on his story.

  • that boy on a bike is dead .....=(

  • Good documentary.

  • Thank you for sharing this. It was a simple, beautiful piece of film. I'm sorry so many & so much was destroyed, though I know the Japanese people are resilient & will always have support no matter how much time passes.

I wish those commenting would respect the subject of this film, its about people and human survival, not animals, not anything else. Please take a moment to ponder that before leaving a comment~

    Keep up the work JourneyManPictures!

  • i see the eco-terrorists are gloating over the disaster. Truly lower than human beings, they should be skewered and eaten.

  • Comment below.. Well said

Oh rich comment, I meant no offense to the people who died! But alas you call me "self righteous" but I fear the it a bit off. What are the difference between people and animals? You must be the self righteous twat who thinks humans have more value than animals, that an invisible daddy placed us here to control and use then as we see fit. We share all our DNA with all animals which means we all have a common ancestor which means we are not a special species:) ........twat

    空気読めやアホ!

  • @blade004 Compared with what I was really thinking, what I wrote was polite. I am not going to waste my time with your hamfisted attempt to save face. Which is simply substanceless pontification. If you would like to clarify your original reply then please do so. Otherwise we are done.

  • see some of what was there before
