While millions of viewers watch this year's Belmont Stakes, former champions like Charismatic and War Emblem are half a world away in Japan. Thousands of other less famous U.S.-bred thoroughbreds have also been exported overseas for breeding and racing. When they are no longer useful, most of these horses will be slaughtered.

Undercover investigators have recorded exclusive footage in a Japanese horse slaughterhouse in which 4,500 horses are killed and cut up each year—many of them racehorses—to be processed into food for dogs and humans. Slaughterhouses such as the Kumamoto Shokuniku Center, which was exposed by our investigators, are often the last stop in a system that routinely produces tens of thousands of "surplus" thoroughbreds each year because there is no plan for what to do with them after their racing or breeding days are over.

Ten years ago Charismatic won the 125th Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. He nearly went on to win horse racing's Triple Crown before he tragically broke his leg near the finish line at the Belmont Stakes. Unlike Barbaro, Eight Belles, and the more than 1,000 U.S. racehorses who suffer fatal breakdowns on the track every year, Charismatic survived and was sold soon after like a commodity and exported to Japan for breeding purposes.

While millions of viewers watch this year's Belmont Stakes, Charismatic—half a world away and with his value as a stallion plummeting—could be facing the same fate as fellow Kentucky Derby winner Ferdinand, who was slaughtered for dog food at the end of an unsuccessful stud career in Japan.

In 2008, more than 100,000 American-bred horses were exported to Canada, Mexico, and Japan and slaughtered for meat—many of these were thoroughbreds.

For Charismatic, War Emblem, and the tens of thousands of less famous racehorses who face slaughter, please take the three actions to the right of this letter. While racing fans are glued to media coverage surrounding the Belmont Stakes, there is no better time to make a difference in the lives of thousands of horses. Thank you.

  • i dont like horse rased to begin with, but if those horses will be a foot then i dont have problem with that. And i dont see any cruel actions in this movie.

  • see the horse that is being washed down before then you see the horse jumping up and then you hear a scream from the horse and these are babies !! and they love horse meat the have a resterant on every coner of every street that has horse meat and they love the smell of fresh killed horse !! very sick I would say !!!!

  • I knew that the French ate horse meat but I did not know that the Japanese did. This is horrible and I wish the people of Japan would speak out against it. Horses are not food. Horses are beautiful and loving animals who have help mankind grow and develop into the dominate species on the planet. Imagine a world without horses, we would all still be living in Africa.

  • I guess the mercury-brain-poisoned Japs never figured out that Oppenheimer is an extraterrestrial just waiting to come back to finish off these psychos once and for all. Two atomic bombs for the slaughterers of whales and dolphins and horses -- a pretty big hint from atomic bomb mastermind Julius Robert Oppenheimer. And deaths slow and obscene for the Japs and their bad seed kids too.

  • its not horse races. its irresponsible horse owners mass producing these horses and utilizing inhumane slaughter as a dumping ground. It starts with responsible breeding! slaughterhouses are just a dumping ground. Its cruel, inhumane, can never be done correctly and teaches people to discard their horses instead of find responsible homes and future careers. rescues, pony club, 4h, donations, gelding, humane euthanasia, HSUS. End horse slaughter!

  • @MrMrG3AR shows how dumb you pick lettuce over a living bleeding being.

  • @AnaxagorasLive Yet they helped us when Katrina hit the states. We're a much larger nation, so in reality, we eat much much more than they do; not to mention they have portion control and us Americans can never have too much.

  • @normalguyable Plant murderers like you are going to burn in hell for eating innocent vegetables and fruit!!! D: Then Lucy Lue Lucifer will eat you in a big bun burger!

  • This is a dumb video. It does not show the method of slaughter. And why single out horses? Because princesses love horses? What about pigs or sheep or cattle? Why highlight horses? I think this is just an attempt to get people to be emotional instead of rational.

  • HORSE MEAT IS AWESOME
