FINALLY... let's look at the ref scandal in the playoffs last year. The Suns are one of the more popular teams in the NBA... and Steve Nash has one of the more popular Jerseys. If there was an Nba conspiracy the conspiracy would have been against the SPURS not the Suns... but it was the SUNS who were harmed by the calls of that gambling ref.
Again these theories don't stand up to scrutiny.
I'll come back at you with some stats from the Heat vs. Mavs final if I can find some.
that's why Hockey isn't popular in America... most of the players are foreign... people want to root for players/teams that they have an emotional tie to- and it's kind of hard rooting for a player who's from a different country
Part of the reason why the ratings have been decreasing for baseball and basketball is because of the increased foreign presence in those leagues.
Well, the whole teams in Europe thing is PURE BUSINESS.. David Stern is looking for extra revenue streams to increase the financial growth of the NBA. He doesn't think it is possible only in the U.S. What he's trying to do is the SAME THING with the NFL having the Giants and Dolphins play in Europe, NFL Europe, MLB sending teams to play in Japan, and NASCAR allowing Toyota as one of the cars on the track.
In the end, these attempts will NOT WORK because NO ONE CARES about Europe or Asia.
Like you said, Stern is a business man, which means he looked at the big picture of a worldwide NBA market, and that's how he was able to overlook poor ratings for the Spurs. I don't have facts to back this one up, but I will bet that the most popular NBA teams in countries other than USA are the Spurs and the Rockets. The Spurs in The Caribbean (Duncan), France (Parker), and South America-namely Argentina (Ginobli) and the Rockets in China
Yeah, they didn't get viewers then, but now look at it... Stern's already working on teams in Europe, and soon enough Asia.... It started with the Spurs.
I'm not saying that Stern wants to totally controll all of the players, he understands that the players bring him money, so when they complained about the ball, he changed it back.
What he does want to control though is the owners, which he does a pretty good job of, with the exception of Mark Cuban.

If you want to talk about a league owner looking for pushovers, check out ROGER GOODDELL. Shoot u could even say the same thing about Bud Selig... David Stern allowed Mark Cuban to own the mavs... there is no way in hell bud selig will allow Cuban to own the Cubs like he wants to do...

I'll look up all the stats later but I DO remember that KOBE has the number one selling Jersey in China and I think Yao's Jersey ranked fourth.
