a scene from the 1969 film "The Guru." Tom Pickle (Michael York) is the British rock star who travels to India to learn the sitar from Ustad Zafar Khan (Uptal Dutt). Much to the dismay of his aggressive agent Chris (Barry Foster), he leaves the money-making music world behind to learn about the exotic Indian instrument. Khan believes Tom lacks focus but has the talent, and a young hippie girl arrives (Rita Tushingham) who has the focus but not the natural talent that Tom possesses. Soon the Guru Khan becomes frustrated over the lack of spiritual commitment of his students, as the rocker contemplates his return to swinging London town.
someone who has the film should upload it onto youtube. it would make for wonderful viewing.

I've managed, after many years, to get a great quality copy of this rare movie from the internet. In widescreen too. As far as I know it's never been officially released here in the UK or the States on DVD but now....
BTW That's my tabla guru, the late Pandit Manik Rao Popatkar, 'playing' on the left.

@jshsitar Bilawal was the recurrent raga in the film with many variations, including a brilliant jugalbandi by the Guru and his student (Vilyat and Imrat Khan Sahibs). The film also has an absolutely superb Yaman that truly sets the bar for chhote khayals for sitar.

I remember seeing this on TV in the early 70's. Learned a few of the sitar tunes. I believe it was Vilayat and Imrat Khan who played most of the sitar. I recall that besides this Bahar, there was a Bilawal and possibly Bhairavi. It was a brilliant idea to involve Vilayat in this film.

To think that Michael's fiancee was extremely sick through most of the production of this movie
I read his autobiography XD
