The stredici challenges the relationship of the musician to the tradition of the instrument as a prosthetic or a device embraced by the musician by proposing that the instrument is of a size to engage the musician at an architectural scale. At 16 feet in length, the stredici is a long-arched wooden structure strung from end to end with 27 strings. It is the first in a series of proposed innovations in the design and construction of instruments and spaces of both aurality and the production of sound. The stredici was commissioned by tranSpectra, a collective of artists based exploring an alternative tuning system, the Bohlen-Pierce scale.
