Sonification of a flame fractal. Composed by Gustavo Díaz-Jerez.

Procedure:

- X axis of image mapped to time, in seconds.

- Y axis of image mapped to frequency (27.5 - 4163Hz, continuous, exponential scale, using sinusoids).

- Red/Blue information transcribed to left/right channels. Green information computed separately and merged into file.

- Brightness of pixels mapped to dynamic range.

- Best if lisened with headphones.

The right side shows a spectrogram and a bar diagram of the sound. The bottom shows the wave form.

Postprocessing: reverb added.

Fractal image rendered with Apophysis.

Notice that this is not somehow inspired or "based" on the image. It IS how the image translates to sound for the given paramenters.

  • Which software do you use for sonification?

  • @Jdonovanford I use several: Photosounder, AudioPaint, Spear (for spectral analysis)

  • After seeing these recurring patterns that were difficult to encapsulate and recognize as anything specific, with a feeling that there was more to them, I searched the net for months and eventually found fractals (hadn't heard the word fractal before, seems silly that I hadn't now I have), they were what I was seeing! Truly awesome! I've begun learning math again so that I can study them more. (I don't much like math either but I feel compelled).

  • Fractals are at the heart almost everything I think, I remember tripping on LSD the first time, I thought I was beginning to go insane when I started to see patterns everywhere, when I closed my eyes I saw more abstract patterns of infinite complexity too, I zoomed in on the patterns in my head thinking that logically they should reach a limit (spirals going towards a centre point for example, but the more I zoomed in the more was revealed.
