He was on wet track and trying to stop. His :sander"...which lays sand on the track in front of the wheels was not working..that was a close call. Good motorman. PCC's should be running in every major city in America like they used too when we were a much better country.

Taking streetcar lines out of service is really stupid!

100 patrons, not always with the best of comfort, however, over the years they added cushioned retan seats, some cars were double ended on certain routes, and they added "flip over" seats, which could be reversed in either direction, in short the Peter witt cars remained in service in most cities for over 50 years.

The point I was getting at is this, while the PCC's were leaner, lighter and quicker on the go, they did not have the durability that the former "Peter witt" or "Nearside" cars had. The Peter witt's were introduced to Philadelphia in 1911, when Thomas Mitten was appointed CEO of the Phila. I have to also add, PCC cars became the standard for streetcars in the mid 1930's when they were introduced, several different coach manufacturers made them, all following the basic design, most of the one's sold to Philadelphia were from the St. Louis car co. The J.G. Brill company which was the leader in streetcar design for years named there PCC's "Brilliners" Ironically, the Phila. and suburban Red Arrow co. used mostly the Brilliners, they were double ended cars, and very sharp looking to.

I live in Philly, I haven't been up to Germantown lately, I live in South Philly, is it true that Septa has covered over most of the tracks and even the loop in Chestnut hill, is the route 23 really going away? I know in south Philly at 12th. and Snyder they covered over a small portion of track when they repaved Snyder Avenue last year, it covers the intersection and a switch, it is a shame, for Philly held on to the trolleys, now everyone wants them again, and we are getting rid of them!
