Fit for the seas of tomorrow - the graduate school GLOMAR

At the Bremen International Graduate School for Marine Sciences - in short: GLOMAR - natural and social scientists are trained together. The aim: to develop an interdisciplinary understanding for the open scientific questions associated with global change in the marine realm. Gaining international research experience is a main focus of the graduate schools training programme and the base for future international careers. PhD student Martin Lukas explores a lagoon on Java, whereas Stephanie Kusch investigates the sediments of the sea floor together with colleagues from Japan. Besides her research training she also takes part in the mentoring programme plan m for female scientists, in which experienced female professors advise, guide and support young female scientist in planning a career in science. At GLOMAR, marine science training does not stop at disciplinary boundaries. Till Markus, a legal expert, investigates the EU fishery rules and learns at the same time in the graduate school about marine ecosystems from a natural science view. Thus, GLOMAR breaks new ground in marine science education and training and gets young scientists fit for the seas of tomorrow.
