A fascinating documentary following Sir John Franklin's ill fated attempt & Roald Amundsen's subsequent successful crossing of the Northwest Passage.

  • How sad that the makers of this documentary, and almost certainly the vast majority of people, ultimately judge such a remarkable man not by his achievements, but by the fact he did not marry and reproduce.

  • @auscanman I thought exactly the same... What does this have to do with historical achievements??!? So sad, it was such a good documentary. Up to that point.

  • thank you for uploading. haunting and thought-provoking. and now i have to go watch the Top Gear Polar Special, to cheer myself up.

  • A great documentary but wrong in the fact that Roald Amundsen's was not the first to discover the NorthWest Passage. He may have been the first to actually sail through the passage. It was actually Sir Robert John Le Mesurier McClure (28 January 1807 - 17

    October 1873)

He actually published a book titled 'The Discovery of the North west Passage' in 1854 and was awarded 10,000 pounds from UK Government. McClure strait is named after him.

  • @auscanman "Vast majority?" Rather overstated, there will be some, yes, but doubtful a "vast majority."

  • Ok so now i understand why he was 5 weeks ahead of Scot to the north pole .

Wow this documentary was amazing thank you Steve for allowing us to watch this .

  • Thanks For The Upload,My 5th Grade Class Were Fascinated!

  • Thanks for the videos!

  • Thanks for these vids mate. I never knew Amundsen died like that, but i guess he wouldn't have had it any other way.Just like Sir John and his crew,he leaves a new generation of explorers with an enduring mystery!!!
