The deepest damage of the disease is to the "inner person." It is far more devastating than the damage to the body in most cases. The Big Book calls alcoholism a "soul-sickness". Through denial and other behavior, the alcoholic lives against his or her conscience. Step Four calls for a moral inventory. The answer then is spiritual. AA is a set of spiritual principles. The result of living these principles should be serenity, which is nothing more than "PEACE OF CONSCIENCE."

The Oxford Group is NOT Alcoholics Anonymous. Some of the principles used by the Oxford Group are used by Alcoholics Anonymous, but they are not the same.

The Oxford Group espoused a particular doctrine and spirituality, Alcoholics Anonymous does not.

  • I love Father Martin. I was first introduced to his lectures in 1985. I'm still sober and grateful that this gentle and honest caring man was part of my journey.
