Why is it called the greenhouse effect?
Broadcast Date: May 21, 1977

What does the greenhouse effect have to do with a greenhouse? And how does it work? In this 1977 clip from CBC Radio's Quirks and Quarks, popular science author Isaac Asimov tells us all about the greenhouse effect and how it could be warming up the Earth. He also explains why we should care. "This greenhouse effect can be very serious," says Asimov, "and it's something that we have to take into account."

  • Thanks for posting. His 1989 discusson of the greenhouse effect shows a greater concern for what was happening. It's worth a look too.

  • For younger viewers, like me: SST means Supersonic Transport and refers to high-speed aeroplanes like the concorde that flew in the stratosphere. The issue of emissions in the stratosphere was a big issue back then.

I learned about SST just weeks ago reading 'Merchants of Doubt'.

I guess many people my age would never have heard about SST.

  • I love finding little gems like this. Reminds me of why Asimov was one of my favorite science writers (still is). He explains things and their potential consequences so anyone can understand them.

  • Interesting. Isaac Asimov is my all-time favourite author & so as a long time fan - thanks for posting this. :-)

One question - what's the galactic backdrop used there?

One slight suggestion to improve this if I may - perhaps you could vary the backdrop switching to other, perhaps more relevant images, after intervals of, say, ten seconds or so? Not that I mind - it looks great, just a thought.
