Winona Ryder was going with Johnny Depp during the making of this movie. It's something that Christina Ricci would years later make a movie with him. One of my favorites, Sleepy Hollow. Has anyone Googled what the title "Mermaids" in this movie means?

@demiandfaber don't you know what a metaphor is? The word Mermaids is used as a metaphor.

For everyone who hasn't figured out that this movie doesn't revolve around Mermaids-I believe the title is called this because, well, for one thing, it's a use of symbollism. For example, the mockingbird in To Kill A Mockingbird is a symbol of innocence. The Mermaid in this movie, I think represents basically all 3 girls, even Katie, because she loves to swim. It ties along with the theme of water and ocean. Plus if they gave it an average title, it wouldn't be as smart and wouldn't make u think

I LOVE CHERS BODY!!!
@zukolover666 The use of the word mermaid is a metaphor. Mermaids could either be dark, fickle creatures that would seduce men and take them to the bottom of the ocean. While at the same time there is the story of the little mermaid a being with a pure soul. All in all mermaids are associated with women, so instead of the title being called something like women, it's called mermaids to represent if anything the constant changing of emotions that all the characters go through.
