Here's a performance of my transcription of Coltrane's solo on "Trane's Slo Blues", from his album Lush Life. It's not as clean as I'd like it, but hey - it's Coltrane.

I feel like I've learned a lot from this solo. His intervalic ideas are unlike anything else I've played. Now for an in-depth analysis, and to see how much of this I can apply to my own playing.

Elrick Gold Standard (w/Bartolini pups & Aguilar OBP-3), Avalon U5 (no EQ)

New transcriptions are also posted on my blog: arcellus.blogspot.com, and there is an archive of my transcriptions at www.arcellussykes.com/archive.html.

I also do custom transcription work - visit www.arcellussykes.com/transcriptions.html for details.

  • man you have done coltrane proud. your playing is so fluid. hey i recently started studying the bass,do you have any tips for a beginner. awesome stuff dude.

  • @MrNathan791 practice slowly.. never move on from anything you're practicing until you've mastered it.. be honest with yourself.. only practice the things you love.. play everything in all 12 keys.. transcribe.. etc etc etc.

  • Man... your transcriptions aren't free anymore. Talk about a let down. I loved those things.

  • Sorry about that - just trying to make a living.

  • They just ignore totally what's all about.......sometimes is ego, lack of understanding, and sometimes they're just plain deaf.

Nice job arcellus. My respects to you.

  • Awesome! Your right hand technique seems very reminiscent of Matthew Garrison, am I correct to think this? I'd love for you to do a video lesson on this right hand technique

  • Not to knowledgable of Coltrane's music but this sounds very very nice :-).

  • Hey! Are you a classically trained guitarist? You use your right thumb a lot. I learned a different technique for bass playing. Whats the story? Anyway, it sounds real good.

  • Great great job! Can you talk me about your bass? ash or alder? p.u. Bartolini? bolt-on?

    thank you so much!

  • Gold Finger だね!

  • At that point he was mostly playing tritone subs and Trane changes over II Vs in order to get outside the established harmony. Of course, he eventually took it way beyond those substitutions eventually, but after listening to the solos on those albums over an over, it began to click with me what he was doing.

  • Nice!

Have you done the "Blues To You" solo?

Those two albums, Coltrane Plays the Blues and Coltrane's Sound were an epiphany for me in beginning to understand how Trane played "out" over changes and made it sound logical and melodic.

  • incredible. (:

  • hey man, how do you approach transcribing?

  • WOW!!!!
