What the lathe does is spins the 2d drawing around a central point for you.
Basically - What he drew was half of the plunger's base, then the lathe modifier made the rest of the shape for him by rotating it around the center.

i dont get the lath modifier how did u create the bottom piece by drawing somthing that looked nothing like it lol
