The Escambia School District is looking into who hacked into it's main web site.

Somebody left anti-Muslim remarks on the site yesterday afternoon.

Channel Three's James Jackson joins us live from the school district administration office with more.

James?

The district's web site is back up and running.

Officials say this isn't the first time the site has been compromised.

It was Monday afternoon.

Brown-Barge Middle School Principal Patricia Kerrigan found out the school district's web site had been hacked.

That's when she gave the order to shut off all computers.

Dr. Patricia Kerrigan/Brown-Barge Middle School, "That's standard operating procedure for us here at Brown-Barge. We have a lot of technology on the school site and if we have electricity going on with lightning strikes or brown outs or those type of things, it's common for us to power down."

Someone left music and anti-Muslim phrases on the site.

The district's Information Technology Department is trying to find out who modified the computer hardware.

School District Deputy Superintendent Norm Ross says the site was also compromised a couple years ago.

Glenn Obert/webfootenterprises.com, "It's quite common. I would say every few weeks go by, you hear a couple of stories. Sometimes it's just on a small scale. A couple of personal web sites and then, other times, you hear them taking down whole companies."

Glenn Obert, with webfootenterprises-dot-com and Cyber Smart Computers, says there are things you can do to protect your web site.

Glenn Obert/webfootenterprises.com, "Make sure you have a credible developer making it for you. It's one of the most things that's most important on there. make sure that the site is tight. That it doesn't have any holes or back doors into it and that the site is designed to work smoothly and adequately without crashing. Because crashing again, puts a hole in a web site too."

Ross says it could take days even weeks before their IT department knows who broke into their system.

Deputy Superintendent Ross tells me they are taking this offense very seriously and will pursue criminal charges against the person or person's responsible.
