Second Avenue Subway - 9/22/2011 Update

On September 22, 2011, a tunnel boring machine (TBM) broke through rock just east of the Lexington Ave-63rd St. station, making the completion of tunneling for Phase 1 of the Second Avenue Subway.

Actually, the Great Depression and WWII is to blame for the SAS not being constructed in the 30s. In fact, there are a good 15 INDependent Subway lines that were not constructed across the city. Imagine the service if they were.

it always does and most of the time it is completed sooner. for example the the new 7 line is 10 months nearly a year above its schedule.

I don't remember hearing of even one death among the sandhogs who carved out this tunnel. That's a fitting end to a usually very dangerous job.
