The Rule is also consistent with tournament rules from the Middle Ages. It might not fit modern ideas of a street fight or even war, but it does comport with a common limitation set out in period tourneys.

I know what the SCA is. I think that rule was always the biggest problem for me. It's just not realistic combat if you pretend the legs don't exist.

I agree that it seems that way from the outside, but if you look to the historic texts and paintings you will see only a minor amount of leg armor on foot soldiers. No one strikes low except as a last ditch effort for fear of the "God Strike" (it has a German name that escapes me, but that is the translation) A powerful strike straight down. There are Japanese stories of a similar strike as well. Trading your head for their shin is a bad idea every time.

These are internationally recognized rules as well. They allow us to stay true to our educational / teaching roots as well. If there were too many injuries, we would not be allowed to do demonstrations at schools, public parks, & universities.

Ok cause I was wondering. Legs seem really undefended. Kinda changes the whole dynamic if you have sharp knives heading for your shins, doncha think? Quick duck and a swipe, game over man.

We cannot strike the legs from 1'' above the knees and down, or the hands intentionally. The rest of the body is fair game at full force with a solid rattan "sword". Check out SCA.ORG , that is our main website. You can look up your local group from there if you are interested. I have done several forms of martial arts throughout my life, and for me this is by far the most fun.

Sweep the leg!

@afwoods
That would be AWESOME! Unfortunately that is not an option within our rule set.
