Okhta Centre, St Petersburg

RMJM design for Russian gas giant Gazprom HQ. A 396 metre high twisting, glass needle which echoes the spires across the city of St Petersburg. RMJM beat 5 other internationally-renowned architects for the commission to develop proposals for the tower in the historic heart of the city, close to the Bolsheokhtinsky Bridge and Smolny Cathedral.

Old city needs new commercial and bussInes center. St. Petersburg is no exception. Even in Rome, Paris and London...there are new modern buissenes centers and tall buildings.

It is good for city GDP.

Cities are dynamic and must change over time, the important thing is to develop a modern Russian style. This building seems to do that with a style that echos ice and crystal. The upside is you will be able to appreciate the city from a new vantage, and if you don't like looking at it, move into it!

This will destroy the skyline of this gorgeous city.

BY LAW no building taller than the Petropavlovsk Fortress can be built in St Petersburg. Yet the mayor of Petersburg, somehow managing to maintain a straight face throughout, allowed this monstrosity to go through.

Look at the amazing Smolny Cathedral in the background at 1:40, completely overshadowed by this beast.

In Russia, there is one law for Gazprom, and another law for the rest.

Really amazing. Awesome. The tower will just match this traditional city, St. Petersburg. I feel beauty, not power. I think this is from emotion and philosophy the architect/designer has. I am moved. Looking forward to visit! This will value more this city of heritage!
